A biologist by training, he has developed an extensive scientific career in the field of ornithology, with a particular focus on the study of seabirds, steppe birds, and species that are occasionally or accidentally recorded in Spain.

In the field of conservation, he has been closely linked to the Spanish Ornithological Society (SEO/BirdLife), where he held the positions of Secretary General and President for many years. His commitment to the dissemination and protection of natural heritage has made him a leading figure in the study and conservation of birds in the Iberian Peninsula.

He has participated in numerous international projects and is the author or co-author of a wide range of scientific publications, books, and field guides. Among his most notable works are his contributions to the Handbook of the Birds of the World (volume 1 and volume 9) and his role as co-author of the Atlas of Breeding Birds of Spain.

In addition to his academic and conservation work, he has remained committed to bringing ornithological knowledge closer to the public, combining scientific rigour with an accessible and engaging style of communication.
