Josep Garcia Garcia
Josep Garcia is a naturalist by vocation and a biologist by training. Linked to the Barcelona Zoo since 1985, he is co-author of the Inventory of Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians and Fish of Barcelona’s Parks (2008), promoted by the Barcelona City Council. He has also contributed to several publications, including Barcelona Biodiversitat Urbana (2000), published by the same City Council, as well as the Atlas of Breeding Birds of Catalonia 1999–2002 (2004) and the Atlas of Winter Birds of Catalonia 2006–2009 (2011), both published by ICO and Lynx Edicions.
He monitors the wild heron colony at the Zoo, as well as the evolution of grey heron breeding colonies across Catalonia (with the help of dedicated collaborators), focusing his research on breeding strategies. He has also taken part in studies on the conservation of the jackdaw population in Barcelona, promoted by the City Council.
Beyond Catalonia, he is a member of the IUCN-SCC Heron Specialist Group, Wetlands International, and the Working Group on Sustainable Livelihoods (Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy) of the IUCN. He has also collaborated with Iran’s Department of the Environment and various local naturalist associations in wildlife monitoring and ornithological surveys, producing several internal reports. He is part of the research team of the Persian Leopard Conservation Society.
