This book tells the story of a spoonbill we have called Sinagote, a female bird born on the island of Vlieland, in the Netherlands. In her name she carries the words ‘Sina’, the Breton name of the village in Britanny she returns to every autumn, and ‘gote’ which means ‘girl from’.

This story is about more spoonbills than just Sinagote. It’s even about much more than spoonbills and the connections between them. It’s also about the connections between countries in Europe and Africa, between the people who live and work there, who have an affection for spoonbills and work for their well-being. Part love story, part success story, Sinagote, biographie d’une spatule describes the importance of looking beyond our national borders in the protection of migratory birds.

With the involvement of more than 9000 citizen scientists and the volunteers of the Spoonbill Working Group, the Dutch research on spoonbills along the East Atlantic migratory route is considered authoritative. Based on work at the University of Groningen, the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, the University of Amsterdam and the Netherlands’ State Forest Service, and together with amateur photographer Michiel Muller, this is a passionately told story.

Dans ce livre, nous racontons l’histoire d’une spatule que nous avons appelée Sinagote. Il s’agit d’une femelle née sur l’île de Vlieland, aux Pays-Bas. En breton, son nom signifie « l’habitante de Séné », ce village vers lequel elle revient chaque automne pour passer l’hiver.

Cette histoire est celle de Sinagote mais aussi des spatules en général et des liens qui les unissent. Elle parle également des liens entre les pays d’Europe et d’Afrique, entre les personnes qui y vivent et y travaillent, qui aiment les spatules et œuvrent pour leur protection. En partie histoire d’amour, en partie histoire de réussite, Sinagote, biographie d’une spatule nous dit combien il est important d’observer, de penser et d’agir au-delà de nos frontières nationales pour protéger les oiseaux migrateurs.

Grâce à la participation de plus de 9000 « citoyennes et citoyens scientifiques » et aux efforts des bénévoles du groupe de travail sur les spatules – le Spoonbill Working Group – les recherches néerlandaises sur les spatules le long de la voie de migration de l’Atlantique Est font autorité. C’est avec passion que les auteurs racontent cette histoire basée sur les travaux menés par l’Université de Groningue, l’Institut royal néerlandais de recherches marines (NIOZ), l’Université d’Amsterdam, le Service néerlandais des Forêts, et avec le concours du photographe amateur Michiel Muller.
