Description
This is the fourth edition of the first comprehensive field guide to the birds of Catalonia, the Valencian Community, the Balearic Islands, Roussillon, Andorra and La Franja de Ponent. It covers all species with regular or occasional occurrence, all of them illustrated with more than 1,000 drawings that allow identification of their different plumages by sex and age, including recently established exotic birds. The texts and maps have been produced specifically for this work, and include the most current data, some of them unpublished.
For each species, the guide provides five blocks of information: illustration, text, map, QR code and, as a novelty in this edition, a phenology chart. In all cases, these five blocks are presented together on the same double-page spread to make it easier to consult all information at once.
The text includes the Catalan name and the scientific name (indicating when names differ in the Valencian Community or the Balearic Islands), size, plumage differences with similar species, voice, ecological requirements, behaviour, distribution in the Western Palearctic and in the area covered by the guide, as well as population size and trend.
The QR code links directly to the Ornithological Information Server of Catalonia (SIOC) of the ICO, where detailed data on the status of the species in Catalonia can be consulted, along with photographs and sound recordings that complement the information in the guide.
Highlights of the fourth edition:
- Revised data on the status, distribution and population size of each species based on the most recent information available.
- More than 340 updated distribution maps, virtually all of them.
- Includes 25 new species that have recently colonised the area or that are rare but regular visitors, such as the Ring-necked Duck, Red-necked Phalarope, Eurasian Scops Owl, Hodgson’s Pipit or the Blue Rock Thrush. Seventy new drawings have also been added to illustrate new species, to redraw some existing ones or to expand the plumage variants shown for certain species.
- Revised taxonomy incorporating the most recent information, resulting in significant changes such as the appearance of new families or the rearrangement of many species.
- Updated scientific nomenclature and Catalan common names following the Llista dels ocells de Catalunya, published in 2024 by the Catalan Rarities Committee.
- Updated Valencian common names following the Atles dels ocells de València, published in 2021 by the Valencian Ornithological Society.
- Includes a QR code next to the text of each species giving direct access to the information, photo gallery and sound recordings of SIOC (Ornithological Information Server of Catalonia).
- Most species also feature a phenology chart showing the species’ abundance for each month of the year, based on data from the 2015–2025 period.
