“This superb field guide to the country identifies 18 birding hotspots, each with notes on possible species and ideas for travel and local accommodation. One is the infamous Mekong Delta where the really lucky visitor might spot a Spoon-billed Sandpiper. The illustrations are among the best I have seen, each species having breeding, non-breeding and sub-species plumages and excellent maps. At 400 pages and measuring 24 × 16 cms this is a chunky book, but is both essential to get the best out of a trip and as fine a memento of the visit as will be found. Thoroughly recommended.”

“This is the first field guide dedicated to Vietnam and is really welcome. It describes and illustrates all 911 species that have been recorded and provides colour maps for all except vagrants, and always next to the illustration rather than the text./…/
Weighing in at around 1 kg this is a very portable guide and added greatly to the enjoyment of my trip.”

Ketith Betton, British Birds, 8 September 2019

“This new field guide, with an attractive design that includes clear distribution maps alongside the illustrations, and the text opposite the relevant plates, will be much appreciated by birders visiting Vietnam.

Overall, this is an impressive and very welcome field guide /…/. I am certainly looking forward to testing this guide out on my next visit to Vietnam. Whilst it does not have such detailed text as that in Robson’s guide, it does have the advantage of good maps, and if you are only going to Vietnam, you will not be confused by all the other species that are crowded onto the plates in Robson’s book.”

Frank Lambert, The Birder’s Library, 5 May 2019.

“For me, a good foreign bird guide is one that doesn’t just inform you of the many species you might see on your travels, but also takes the time to introduce you to the area and habitats you will be visiting when in a new country. The Birds of Vietnam by Craik and Minh is one of these, with clear and distinguishable illustrations prefaced by a good introduction to the country and help on how to plan your trip. /…/

Each species is nicely detailed, mapped and illustrated across well-spaced pages with neatly highlighted sections. /…/

In all I’d recommend getting this book to help both your identification and planning of a birding trip to Vietnam.”

Katharine Bowgen, BTO, April 2019

“STOP PRESS – having now used this field guide ‘in the field’ I can confirm it’s awesomeness! Very accurate plates and descriptions and details of imminent splits too.”

“Also included is card which carries a unique code so download a full checklist of the birds of Vietnam from the publisher’s website; a very nice addition./…/ With a hard cover version for the book shelf and a waterproof soft cover version for the field at least one should be a must-have for birders in the region and it would be unthinkable to go birding in Vietnam without this guide.”

Nick Upton, www.thaibirding.com, January 2019

“RECOMMENDATION: A must have for those birding Vietnam!”

Description

The most complete and updated field guide to the birds of Vietnam. This field guide, the first uniquely dedicated to the country’s rich birdlife, describes all recorded species in text and illustrations, with distribution maps for all except vagrants.

For birders, Vietnam is unquestionably one of the key countries in Asia. While its avifauna of just in excess of 900 species is rather overshadowed numerically by some of its near neighbours, especially China and Thailand, ten of these are found nowhere else on Earth and another 27 are almost endemic to the country. Among these are several species new to science discovered at the end of the 20th century, like Chestnut-eared and Golden-winged Laughingthrushes, or species rediscovered after long periods without records, such as the enigmatic Grey-crowned Crocias, all of them the result of a renewed wave of ornithological exploration in the decades since the end of the Vietnam War.

  • Taxonomy follows the HBW and BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World.
  • Detailed texts covering status, habitat and behaviour, age, sex and geographical variation, voice, and confusion species.
  • Over 1900 illustrations covering all species and distinctive subspecies, birds in flight, males and females, juveniles and non-breeding plumages, where appropriate.
  • QR code for each species, linked to complementary audiovisual material.
  • More than 870 full-colour range maps for all species other than vagrants.
  • Well-marked subspecies groups receive full accounts, and the distributions of subspecies breeding in the region are clearly mapped.
  • Local species name included.

Features:

  • 916 species; 46 endemics or near-endemics, 2 introduced, 73 vagrants.
  • c. 1900 illustrations and over 870 distribution maps.

  1. Hanno Stamm

I have lived and birded for a while now and this book is welcome and long-awaited addition to field guides for Vietnam. Much more up-to-date than Robson, well laid out, informative, and accurate. The use of QR codes is novel and works well, network permitting. A must-have for any visitor or anyone interested in Vietnam’s amazing avifauna.

  2. Chris (verified owner)

An excellent and detailed guide written by experienced and knowledgeable authors. As a long-term resident of Vietnam, this book fills a much-needed void in a country that often gets overlooked, despite having an incredible amount of bird species and diversity.
