Description
One in every four bird species in Spain is currently threatened, according to criteria set by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). An additional 32 species are considered “near threatened” and may soon be reclassified into higher risk categories if urgent conservation actions are not taken. Altogether, nearly one-third of Spain’s bird species face some degree of conservation concern.
The main threat is the ongoing destruction and degradation of habitats, driven by urban development, mass tourism, changes in agriculture, pollution, and the unsustainable use of natural resources like water and forests. These pressures are reducing the possibility of a harmonious and sustainable coexistence between human activity and natural ecosystems.
This book presents up-to-date profiles for all bird species currently in a vulnerable situation in Spain, in an accessible format designed for a broad audience. Based on the authoritative Red List of Birds of Spain (2004), it retains scientific accuracy while adopting a more agile and approachable language for non-specialist readers.
Aves amenazadas de España is an essential tool for understanding the current state of Spain’s avifauna and for inspiring greater awareness and action in support of bird conservation.
